Marie Harel est une fermière du XVIIIe siècle, inventrice du camembert. L'histoire de cette statue : grâce à Margaret Mitchell, le Pilot Club International adopta Vimoutiers pour financer sa reconstruction. Pour mieux faire connaître leur cause, une jeune normande fut envoyée aux Etats-Unis. Elle revêtit le costume traditionnel normand et passa dans toute la presse américaine. Les ouvriers d'une fromagerie de l'Ohio, la Borden Cheese Company, après s'être cotisés, firent faire une statue à son effigie. Ils l'offrirent à la Ville de Vimoutiers en s'excusant pour les dégâts causés par les bombardements. En effet, la première statue de Marie Harel (Boulevard Dentu), fut décapitée par les bombardements américains du 14 juin 1944, qui détruisirent la ville.
The history of this statue : The International Pilot Club adopted the town of Vimoutiers to help with its reconstruction. To publicize their cause, a young Norman girl flew to the United States donned traditional Norman Norman dress and had articles published in the press throughout America. Workers in a cheese factory in Ohio - the Borden Cheese Company - raised the money to have a statue made of her. They donated it as a gift to the town of Vimoutiers, apologizing for the damage caused, the first statue of Marie Harel (Boulevard Dentu) having been decapitated by U.S. bombing in 1944.
